What are dentures?

Dentures are also known as "false teeth". You can have either a full or complete set of dentures or partial dentures.

Full dentures are removable devices that replace all natural teeth, and upper and lower arches if necessary. They are held by the gums, though it is possible to have a full denture retained by implants for increased stability. A full denture set is made from an acrylic base and either acrylic or composite teeth. A metal plate can also be inserted into the denture for increased durability.
Removable partial dentures replace one or more missing natural teeth, and is held by the surrounding teeth and gums. A customised partial denture can greatly improve a person’s ability to chew and speak clearly, and may also prevent natural teeth from shifting into the space created by tooth loss. Implant retained Dentures are dentures that are secured onto a permanent dental implant, which offers the necessary support and retention for the removable denture. But as parents, the thought of all the lollies and chocolate our children will consume in such a short space of time will most likely scare us more than the young "The Shining twins" from down the road.

To be honest, many parents can forget to make sure the kids have brushed their teeth before bed every night, but on the 31st of October in particular, it's best not to compromise your oral health. Unfortunately for you, your child is going to be either still on their sugar high, or coming down from it and it's probably going to be a later night than normal night after an evening dressing up, trick or treating and eating copious amounts of lollies with their friends, so convincing them to brush their teeth while they're tired and cranky can be somewhat problematic. Don't give up.

Here are some tips on how to brush your child's teeth correctly

• Brush your teeth along with your child, they are more likely to brush their teeth for as long as necessary when they have an adult to copy.

• Use a pea-sized smear of low-fluoride toothpaste on a soft, age/size appropriate toothbrush.

• With the bristles toward your teeth and gums, brush gently in circles, both on the outer sides and inside of the teeth and gums.

• Brush using a back and fourth motion on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

• Don't forget to floss your children's teeth if they are touching. This helps to remove food and plaque from between the teeth that your toothbrush can't reach. This can be done before or after brushing.

• Rinse mouth thoroughly and never swallow the toothpaste.

If your child experiences any tooth pain in the aftermath of trick-or-treating, contact your dentist as soon as possible for advice and treatment. In the mean time, get your child to rinse their mouth thoroughly with 1 Tablespoon of salt dissolved in a mug or glass of hot/warm water (not too hot, test the temperature before giving to your child to avoid injury). Expel after rinsing, do NOT swallow.
